Charleston, SC -

Douglas A. Snyder, a South Carolina certified public accountant, has been elected chairman of The Citadel Board of Visitors. He replaces Maj. Gen. Arthur H. Baiden III whose term on the college’s governing board concludes June 30, 2009.

The Citadel Board of Visitors is composed of 11 Citadel graduates - seven are elected by joint vote of the South Carolina General Assembly, three are elected by Citadel Alumni Association members and one is appointed by the governor. All members serve six-year terms.

“As chairman, I hope to create an excitement within The Citadel family and the State of South Carolina about the future of the college,” Snyder said. “I would like to see our alumni become more actively involved in all of the great things going on at The Citadel whether it is through annual giving or by contributing their time and resources to the growth and progress of our leadership development program.”

Snyder graduated from The Citadel in 1982 with a degree in business administration. While a cadet he was recognized for outstanding academic achievement, received the Commandant’s Distinguished Service Award, served as president of the Economic Honor Society, served as an executive officer in Delta Company and was a member of the 1982 Summerall Guards silent drill platoon. Snyder is currently serving his third six-year term on the Board of Visitors having first been elected by the South Carolina Legislature in 1996. He served as BOV vice chairman from 2002 to 2006 and has served as chairman of the finance committee since 1998.

Snyder is the founding partner of The Snyder Firm, which provides accounting, tax and consulting services to emerging businesses and nonprofit organizations throughout South Carolina. Prior to 1990 he was financial services manager with the international accounting firm of PricewaterhouseCoopers.

In addition to his Citadel BOV service, Snyder is a charter member of the South Carolina Secretary of State Non-Profit Advisory Council and the South Carolina Department of Revenue Blue Ribbon Committee for Non-Profits. He is also a member of Phi Kappa Phi national honor society, the American Institute and South Carolina Association of CPAs, the Small Business Regulatory Advisory Council and serves as a deacon at First Scots Presbyterian Church in Charleston
