Charleston, SC -
Options for the Charleston County School Board tonight: raise your taxes or make cuts.
The school board is meeting right now to take the final vote on the proposed budget for next year and district staff hopes they figured out a way to keep everyone happy.
The board wants a budget that does not include higher taxes which means the district has to find somewhere else to make up for the $11 million.
Mike Bobby is the Chief Financial Officer heading up the budget balancing.
Today Bobby is proposing a reduction in property taxes for homeowners and a slight increase for the rest.
Bobby says, that way, buses for magnet students can stay and furloughs will remain at the original three days for teachers and six for other employees.
“What were trying to do is avoid having to decrease the quality of services. Furloughs in our opinion do just that. There’s a morale factor,” Bobby explained. “I think were going to have to pay attention to the fact that next year were going to be facing some of the same challenges, if not worse.
The school district did receive more than $3 million in stimulus money, but is using it to eliminate some of the furlough days.
The district already closed five schools, trying to save millions.
