Barnwell, SC - South Carolina's jobless rate has been among the nation's highest, but one of the state's largest employers is looking to fill thousands of new jobs.
About 2,000 people showed up Wednesday in Barnwell for the third of six town hall meetings and job fairs sponsored by the U.S. Energy Department. The next is planned for June 24 in Allendale.
Employment agencies hope to fill an estimated 3,000 jobs at the former nuclear weapons complex along the South Carolina-Georgia border that will be funded by $1.6 billion in stimulus money.
Earlier this month, hundreds attended a similar job fair in Aiken.
South Carolina's unemployment rate set a state record high of 11.5 percent in April, the third highest in the nation.
