Charleston, SC - The Citadel approves a tuition increase for the upcoming academic year.
According to the Citadel’s Board of Visitors, they approved a tuition increase of 3.6 percent for in-state residents and 7.2 percent for out-of-state residents at its board meeting on Saturday.
This means total annual total cost of attending will be $21,729 for freshmen and $17,663 for upperclassmen for in-state and $35,539 and $31,473 for out-of-state. These numbers reflect mandatory room and board, uniforms and other fees.
The cost per credit hour for The Citadel’s Graduate College will increase from $325 to $400 for in-state students.
“These are tough economic times for everyone, including The Citadel,” Citadel President Lt. Gen. John Rosa said. “We have had to make some very difficult decisions that kept tuition increases down without undermining the integrity of our education.”
The school’s state appropriations were cut 24 percent, or $3.9 million, this past year. That figure set the baseline funding for the fiscal year that starts July 1. The steps taken in the current year to counter the cuts, including hiring and travel freezes, will extend into next year, spokeswoman Charlene Gunnells said.
This is the lowest tuition increase in 10 years and is the same as the cost of inflation for higher education set by the Higher Education Price Index.
The tuition increase last year was 9 percent; the year before that, tuition was increased 7.9 percent for in-state students and 10.3 percent for out-of-state students.
The Citadel is expected to receive about $2.2 million from the federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which is helping keep the tuition increase down.
