Summerville, SC -
The final school bell is the sound of summer vacation for the Green Wave of Summerville High School. Over the weekend Jaime Reeser went from Senior to graduate.
"It was a lot of hard work to get through but it felt good to walk across the stage," she said. "I'm going to BYU in Idaho and I want to study Elementary education."
Successes like hers, is the goal for teachers and administrators. Fueling their enthusiasm is a report from Education Week Magazine. It says the state's high school graduation rate jumped more than 13 percent to 66.3 percent from 1996 to 2006.
"I think anytime we can show the country that SC is making forward progress with education that's wonderful, they're not high enough, they can and should be better,” Deputy Superintendent Barbara Kingsby-Stroble said.
"We tell our seniors they're going to have other graduations but this one is the most important at this time because it opens the doors,” Summerville High School Roger Edwards said.
A helpful path, it’s something Dorchester District 2 is focused on through their "Best Options Program." It provides a boost for students through options like career education, night school and credit recovery.
“The whole idea is to have safety nets for children so we can increase the graduation rate,” Kingsby-Stroble said.
The new numbers a bright spot, but something educators say they’ll continue to improve.
