A Lowcountry hairstylist is in a fight for her life but life saving surgery is out of her reach. The reason: her insurance company will not pay. So she's raising the money herself.
The Maritime Center was buzzing with fun activities Sunday at a fundraiser for Robin Lobosco who is suffering from end stage renal disease.
“So the toxins are building up in my system which is very poisonous,” Robin explained.
Robin says everyday is a struggle.
"It's hard to get up in the morning. It's hard for me to work, very lethargic, very tired, "according to Robin.
A kidney transplant would cure her illness. Robin purchased a health insurance policy seven years ago when she was healthy but now that she's sick, she's learned she doesn't have enough coverage. Robin blames her insurance agent.
“I relied on him and I trusted him to pick out the policy I wanted,” Robin said.
So Robin's trying to raise the $250,000 she needs for the transplant. Major sponsors have come to her aid but she has a long way to go. Her circumstances have made her more aware of one of the major issues on the presidential campaign trail.
“We definitely need health care,” Robin said.
Some good news came from the event; a worker at today's event offered to give Robin one of her kidneys.
