COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina voters will decide who appears on November ballots in six Republican and five Democratic races Tuesday as Governor Mark Sanford (web|news) wraps up weeks of touting his favorites. The unusual effort for a chief executive to challenge incumbents in his own Republican party leaves him with the risk of voters deciding his political influence. Among the candidates Sanford has helped are Katrina Shealy, who is facing incumbent Senator Jake Knotts in Lexington County and Lee Bright, who faces incumbent Representative Scott Talley in Spartanburg County. If history predicts outcomes, Sanford's favorites have the odds in their favor. Five Statehouse Republicans have lost in runoffs since 2002.
