James Earl Reed is now the first person electrocuted in South Carolina in more than four years. Reed had been on death row since 1996. He was convicted of murdering his ex-girlfriend's parents, Joseph and Barbara Lafayette, two years earlier in their Adams Run home. Reed was expected to be executed in the electric chair at six p.m. yesterday, but the electrocution was delayed as defense attorneys successfully obtained a stay from a federal judge. A final effort to halt the sentence was denied by the US Supreme Court.
