Many students attending summer classes at the College of Charleston are still shaken up by Monday's reported case of sexual assault. Police say it happened inside McAlister Hall when a 20-year-old woman invited a man inside. Reports say the two had a prior friendship but never a romantic relationship. They reportedly began kissing but when she said stop he did not.
"You just never know when it's going to happen, if it could happen in a safe place like a dorm room, then I don't feel safe in my own apartment," said junior Bethany Herbert.
Police have identified 35-year-old Rasheid Mervin as the man they believe is responsible. His last known address was listed as a home on Nelson Street in North Charleston, but authorities say he could be living at a half way house on James Island. Mervin has not yet been brought into custody.
"You always have to be careful walking around here, I know that but it doesn't really make me feel unsafe," said Sophomore Megan Hurlburt.
This is the 4th reported case of sexual assault in the month or so in the Charleston area. Unsettling figures to some students.
"I haven't been sleeping well. Every little noise I hear I think 'Oh my God' someone's breaking into my house," Herbert said.
Anyone with information as to the whereabouts of Mervin should contact College of Charleston Police at 953-5609.
