The two women who took a sick baby raccoon to an emergency care center June 8th, were located and one of the women was treated.
Earlier this week, the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC), confirmed that a sample taken from a raccoon at a Veterinary Emergency Care center in Mt. Pleasant was positive for rabies.
The veterinary technician and the woman who brought the animal in both received pre-exposure treatment. The other woman did not touch the raccoon and did not receive treatment.
So far this year, there have been seven confirmed cases of rabies, and they have all been raccoons. Since there is a large population of raccoons in South Carolina, experts say to avoid the species all together, because rabies is fatal in humans.
