Meggett, SC - Two weeks after being seized in Colleton County, 47 neglected horses now show signs of improvement, but only at a high price.

Eight mares check us out at the fence and smile for the camera. They are glad for a handout. These horses were malnourished but nowadays they're eating a lot.

"We're feeding three bags of this a day,” Elizabeth Steed said.

Steed oversees the care of 30 of the horses that now live at the J-Bar Farm in Meggett. She's feeding them high quality food to help their digestion, but it's expensive.

“It's $9 a bale. We're feeding three bales of that a day," Steed said.

Steed is the founder of the Livestock Equine Awareness and Rescue Network that operates entirely from donations.

"We need someone that can help with the feed program.  We need someone that can help with the cost of hay. I know that Colleton County is pretty much tapped out," Steed said.

William Lynes, the director of the Colleton County Animal and Environmental Control agreed.

"In the past Colleton county has taken in two or three horses at a time. However we've never went into a magnitude of this many horses," according to Lynes.

In 30 days Colleton County will have spent $18,000 on the horses.

The horses are doing a whole lot better and are more social now, however they still have numerous signs of neglect.

Their hooves are split and their coats are in horrible condition.

"It's a gnat allergy and it's made worse by not having fly spray to keep the gnats off," Steed explained.

So they still need a lot of care and lots more food.

"As their health improves then their feed intake will improve," according to Steed.

That will allow these horses to gallop into a better life.

A benefit trail ride to help the horses will be held at the Mullet Hall Equestrian Center on Johns Island on Saturday, May 30. The cost is $20.
