Mount Pleasant, SC -
Memorial Waterfront Park in Mount Pleasant is nearly in ship shape.
"Things are going very well and we expect this will be one of the finest waterfront parks in South Carolina," said Deputy Town Administrator Eric Demoura.
The work is about 80 % completed. Crews are continuing to smooth out all the rough edges to the 14 million dollar, 15 acre park. Landscaping and minor work still remain but once opened the park will offer a large war memorial, a sweet grass cultural arts center, a new visitors center and a large pier.
"We have limited access to the water for Mount Pleasant and this will go a long way in rectifying that," Demoura said.
Tucked away underneath the Ravenel Bridge it'll be free to the public though parking will cost 50 cents per hour. Locals say they can't wait to play at the park.
"It'll bring more people here because we always go downtown and they'll have it here and it's beautiful," said Melanie Holmes.
"Anytime you can get close to the water you feel close to nature so it's really going to be great for people that live here," said Joni Siekawitch.
After years on the drawing board, and months of construction Memorial Waterfront Park is nearly ready for visitors to flow in. The grand opening is scheduled for July 3rd.
