Columbia, SC - A South Carolina maximum security prison has been on lockdown for nearly a week as authorities investigate a threat.
Corrections Department spokesman Josh Gelinas said Monday that inmates at the Broad River Correctional Institution aren’t allowed to see visitors or leave their cells during the lockdown.
He refused to provide more details on threats, claiming that the information could get back to inmates.
The 1,500-inmate prison has been on lockdown since last Wednesday.
Authorities say lockdowns are applied when there claims that inmate, staff or public safety could be in jeopardy.
