The city of Charleston officially owns Morris Island now. It purchased the land from developer Bobby Ginn for $3 million. The island has deep roots in Lowcountry history. It was the site for the civil war Battle for Battery Wagner in 1863. That fight was portrayed in the movie "Glory." City officials called Friday's announcement a big deal not only locally but nationally as well.
"The history of Morris Island is an incredible story, it's one that no other city can tell," said Bobby Ginn.
"Morris Island reminds us today that we run the risk of taking for granted the things we've always been expecting as if we will always have them," added Mayor Joe Riley (web|news|bio) .
The city plans to preserve the beauty and historical significance of the island.
"Think of the inspiration of that, for the fact that people learn it's there, and then who come to see it and touch it and feel it," Riley said.
All involved in the purchase and transfer of ownership expressed gratitude for the opportunity to be involved in a deal like this.
"To be a part of it and to bring it to a conclusion, it's a great day for me," Ginn said.
