Eleven months of questions are now answered with the release of the phase two report and Randy Hutchinson, brother of one of the fallen nine, is happy because he says the truth is finally out. He says the reports findings are more for the public, not his family.
"I'm happy it came out because I think it vindicates everything we have said about this fire," Randy Hutchinson said, Billy Hutchinson's brother.
That truth, he says, is summed up in two key mistakes on June 18, a lack of command and a lack of water.
"You don't lose nine men over minor mistakes. These were major components that weren't in tact before the alarm went off and that's the problem. Now almost a year after Captain Hutchinson gave his all, his mother flips through the almost 300 pages of a report detailing his death.
"He would be upset if he knew how he died. He would not enjoy dying by burning alive without a hose in his hand in a panic."
The Hutchinson's are no longer angry but relieved. The night they lost Billy is no longer a mystery.
Randy Hutchinson also says a change was needed in the department. He says he got his wish yesterday when Chief Thomas decided to step down.
