Phase Two of the city's report on the Sofa Super Store fire will be released next Thursday. Mayor Joe Riley (web|news|bio) made that announcement today. Yet, four days ago, Riley said he would delay the report until other federal investigations were complete. He says delaying the report likely would have sparked suspicion. After speaking with firefighters and families of the Charleston Nine, Riley changed his mind.
“I think upon reflection and the fact they would have to wait so long for a document that would somewhat help with closure,” said Riley.
The fire fighters union vowed to rally at tonight's council meeting if the report was delayed. Despite the mayor's decision, many still had a message they wanted to send. Firefighters and their families explained to the Mayor and City Council what this report means and their need for accountability and resolution.
A city council meeting unlike any other. Members of the Charleston fire department lined the balcony. Their supporters on the floor below voicing concerns about the handling of this situation.
“I really don't need the report to know what went on, but I do have many of questions and I hope the report will answer them,” said Dorothy Hutchinson.
Dorothy's son Billy is one of the Charleston Nine. His brother Randy making it clear it’s the city’s responsibility to find out what happen on June 18th 2007.
“It’s a shame we have to come down here and beg, when is something going to happen in this town? We want accountability, that's what my mother just asked you for,” said Randy Hutchinson.
Much of the criticism from the union regarding the Sofa Super Store investigation has fallen on the Mayor's shoulders. But he is not alone.
“That does not absolve you of responsibility, not one bit,” said Jay Lowery addressing the City Council.
But the collective voice of this group calls on council members to take action as well.
“Imagine you, there are 11 of you and nine couldn't come to council tonight because you lost your lives,” said Lowery.
Randy Hutchinson says the release of the report will not be the end of this rather the beginning.
Mayor Riley says he did suggest the report be released as soon as this Friday, but the chief of the panel wanted to wait until next week.
