As foreclosures continue to rise around the country, so do the number of people buying those homes.
Charleston County's foreclosure auctions are becoming a popular spot for those looking save money on their home purchases.
Foreclosed homes on the market packed this area outside the Charleston county court house with everyone ready to put in the highest bid.
"During the big rush there were 50 to 60 people here, during the first quarter of 07 there’d be 8-10 people," said bidding veteran, Colt Chester.
But with the increase in foreclosures came peaking interest.
"A lot of people are transient. They’re coming in the housing market. Mt. Pleasant and Johns Island, not a lot of people can afford out there. Buying foreclosed property offers a great opportunity for them to get a descent, up to a very nice house for the price range."
From $80,000 homes in Downtown Charleston to more than half a million dollar houses in Mt. Pleasant, on the market for the bidding war, but a war that can be lost.
"We had one man buy a piece of property a while ago. He paid us for it, walked in and the whole inside was burned. He asked for his money back and we said no," said Charleston County Auctioneer, Harriet Hendricks.
Its buy ‘as is’, so in this case not doing your homework could really cost you.
A good faith deposit of 5% is required after you win the bid and has to paid that day.
