(AP) -- A lawyer for a South Carolina teen accused of plotting to blow up his high school and who told authorities he wanted to kill Jesus says his client is competent to stand trial.

Federal defense attorney Michael Meetze says in court papers filed Thursday that a psychiatrist made that determination after evaluating 18-year-old Ryan Schallenberger a day earlier at the Chesterfied County jail.

Prosecutors had asked that Schallenberger be evaluated. In a hearing over that motion, a federal agent had testified that Schallenberger told police that he wanted to die, go to heaven and kill Jesus.

Schallenberger was arrested April 19. He faces several state and federal charges, including attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction.
