(AP) -- Key South Carolina lawmakers say they'll support severe sanctions against employers who hire illegal immigrants.
The statements Thursday come a day after the state Senate approved a measure that would fine employers up to $10,000 for knowingly hiring an illegal immigrant. It also would send employers to prison for five years if they falsified documents.
House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Harrison says the penalties against businesses the Senate OK'd now gives the lower chamber an opportunity to approve the sanctions.
Critics say the penalties are too high and mean employers won't even talk to people about jobs if they look like they may be immigrants.
