Colleton County, SC - It was captured on videotape when Colleton County Deputy Jackie Lawson was checking out a 911 call about a shooting in a rural part of the county.
“I had the two guys in the car and I had a female in the woods, running back and forth saying she had been shot,” Deputy Lawson said.
On a video tape, that woman is seen running in the background of Deputy Lawson’s in car camera. The deputy is looking back and forth, keeping an eye on the woman and an eye on the car he stopped.
“At that point I didn’t know he had a weapon, he had concealed his weapon by his right near the kick panel in the car,” Deputy Lawson said.
When Deputy Lawson approached the car, it didn’t take long for him to learn Marvin Lee Williams had a gun.
“This first shot struck my right arm, two inches below my shoulder blade and shattered the bone. I knew I’d been hit when my arm went numb,” Deputy Lawson said.
The shooting could have been much worse.
Williams came with more.
In the video you can see Williams firing another round. He seems to pick up an unspent shell on the ground. Loading it and firing again at Deputy Lawson. Those shots missed the deputy.
“He shot at least two more times at me while I was on the ground. He didn’t really make an attempt to get any closer. He was still 15 feet away from when he was shooting at me.
Williams would steal Deputy Lawson’s patrol car and lead officers on a high speed chase.
Eventually after a four hour stand off Williams was caught and charged with multiple counts.
Deputy Lawson was in court last week when Williams was sentenced to 38 years.
Deputy Lawson continues to serve and protect.
“Long road to recovery and I’m glad it’s over. Colleton County is a much safer place since he's locked up,” Deputy Lawson said.
Williams will have to serve 85 percent of that 38 year sentence.
