Monks Corner, SC - A construction worker died this morning after he was crushed beneath an 18-wheeler he was trying to help free from the mud.
Berkeley County Coroner Glenn Rhoad said the incident occurred just after 8 a.m. on Wednesday, April 1 at Frederick Douglass Avenue.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene. Rhoad declined to identify the man until his family could be notified.
Rhoad said the man was trying to help free a tractor-trailer hauling concrete pipes. The tractor-trailer became bogged down on the dirt road and the man was behind it, attempting to hook a chain from the trailer to a bulldozer.
Rhoad said the driver of the 18-wheeler didn’t see the man behind the trailer and put the truck in reverse, running over the man.
The death is considered accidental.
