The new videos will likely play a role in the confirmation process of Major Mark Keel. He is the Governor's nominee for director of public safety.
The tapes are copies of videos requested by the senate judiciary committee, the same group posed to grill keel about his plans for cleaning up the Highway patrol.
The first of the new videos hits close to home in Charleston County. A man fleeing from police on a motorcycle is brought to a quick stop, when the trooper swerves into his path. The rider flips over the patrol car.
Another video, this one involving a teenager also running from the law. The suspect’s car is rammed by the trooper. A few moments later, the teen is pulled from the car and it appears the trooper stomps on the suspect.
These videos and several others like it are the reason the former Director of Public Safety resigned. His possible replacement, Mark Keel will have to prove to a senate committee, he is ready to take over the much maligned Highway Patrol.
These videos are part of more than 20 cases of complaints against the highway patrol to be reviewed by the senate staff. Keel's confirmation hearings are expected to begin soon and will be wrapped up before lawmakers adjourn for the summer.
