(AP) -- The Senate Finance Committee has held an emergency meeting to begin looking for ways to cut their proposed state spending plan following the news that a weak economy has slowed South Carolina tax collections even more than expected. The committee is considering several ideas to trim $40 million from the state's $7 billion budget proposal. Senator Larry Grooms suggested two-week, unpaid furloughs for state workers may be needed. Senator Greg Ryberg says $11 million for a state tuition prepayment program could be cut along with another $18 million in grants for festivals and special projects. A shortfall projected by the Board of Economic Advisors was $40 million steeper than what was forecast last week by state senators as they crafted the spending plan for the next fiscal year.
