Law makers are scrambling to remedy the situation after several videos were released showing state troopers using questionable behavior. One video picks up audio of a trooper using a racial slur while another shows a trooper kicking a suspect in the head. Now legislators are stepping in.
Senator McConnell is heading up the committee which is in charge of the confirmation process for appointing the new Public Safety Director and he says they are going to ask the new candidate some tough questions.
State legislators say they don't want to see this again, so they are going to put the new Public Safety Director candidate front and center.
"This isn't going to be some quick, fast, and just ‘Hi how are you? What are your goals for the future? Good luck.’ No, were going to be asking hard questions and looking for in depth answers," said McConnell.
Answers to questions about what the committee finds out after their investigation.
"For the person who hasn't been there, we want them to react to the facts and tell us how they would handle it," said McConnell.
Legislators say they want accountability.
“I have no problem with them being stern, I do have a problem with going over board and letting emotions take you into needless beating, kicking somebody, I mean, we don't need that," said McConnell.
Legislators say what the department needs is leadership, but also a close look at what these videos mean.
"You really need to take the time to get to all the facts. The video we've seen is not good but we need to get all of the facts before we decide whether we need to do tighter regulations," said Speaker of the House, Bobby Harrell.
Senator McConnell gave us a copy of the list of what his committee will investigate which includes copies of all 40 tapes and records relating to all the incidents.
Governor Sanford will choose the next Public Safety Director and expects that will happen before June.
