Despite fears of being told to ship out today, shrimp boat captains docked at Shem Creek found out they would not be told to leave today.
"It gives us a little more time but there's still no place to go," said Captain Kevin Truesdell.
The controversy is over the dock which was part of land recently purchased by the town of Mount Pleasant. An inspection called the dock unsafe, that's why the city had asked the shrimpers to leave.
"We might have to moor up in the harbor or go to a marina some place where we can't afford," Truesdell said.
Because the dock is unsafe, the town says there's liability issues there.
"As much as we're sympathetic to the shimpers and the commercial fisherman we've got a greater responsibility to all the citizens of Mount Pleasant," said town administrator Mac Burdette.
Despite a sign telling them to leave as of today, town officials said they would not tow any boats until the issue is discussed at the next town council meeting. That's scheduled for next Tuesday.
