(AP)A Senate subcommittee has approved a billto increase the state's cigarette tax to 57 cents a pack.
The bill would increase the tax from the current 7 cents-a-pack that is the lowest in the country.
Walhalla Senator Thomas Alexander chaired the subcommittee handling the bill. Alexander says it will generate nearly 160million dollars. The money would be used for tax credits to help the state's poorest residents buy health insurance.
