Moncks Corner, SC - Nearly 2,000 Berkeley County kindergarten to second graders learned about preservation, conservation and the environment on Tuesday on the first day of Naturescope.
NatureScope, which is now in its 19th year, is a two day event put on by The Berkeley County Kids Who Care Board of Directors, as an educational event for kids that go the extra mile in the field of science.
“If they participate in a science project then this is kind of a reward for them,” said Joey Johnson, vice chairman of NatureScope.
Johnson also hopes the kids will build on the lessons they learn from the event.
“It lets the kids get a hands-on feel with some of the animals of course, soil conservation, and recycling. We want to make them more aware at this young of age, so as they grow older, they’ll get these aspects built into them,” explained Johnson.
Some of the exhibits at NatureScope include The South Carolina Aquarium, The Charleston Museum, and Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of America.
Many of the kids had smiles on their faces as they got to see snakes, turtles, birds, and a puppet show, while learning about the weather and other environmental and energy topics.
Roark Ferguson, a reptile presenter at NatureScope, says events like this are important in helping students relate with and understand the vulnerability of the environment.
“We want to teach them about conservation values, the value of life and the environment. Because without the environment, the animals will not thrive,” said Ferguson.
On Wednesday, the second day of NatureScope, between one thousand children are expected to be in attendance.
