Charleston, SC - The Charleston Fire Department is banding together to help a fellow firemen's daughter. On March 14, the department held a special fundraiser to raise money for what may be more medical treatment to come.
Cancer can be a scary word.
"I found a spot on my foot and I went in September and had it checked out," said Jennifer Poston.
The news came as a shock, it was melanoma.
She said it was "Overwhelming, because I didn't think it would be anything, just a spot on my foot that had always been there."
She's already been through several surgeries and has many more doctor visits to come, all the while, she has no insurance.
"I had a small little bit of money saved, but this isn't anything you ever expect to happen," said Jennifer.
Her father is Charleston County Fire Department Battalion Chief John Poston. Poston's been in the fire service since the 70's.
"I was asked what my greatest accomplishment in the fire department? I said the love and respect of the men. This is an example of what love and respect will do for you…" he said.
"We all kind of came together as a family, and now were coming together again to help a fellow union member out," said fire fighter and President of Local Union 61 Bill Haigler.
Friends and fire fighters from across the lowcountry have turned out to show support. Jennifer has at least 30,000 dollars in medical bills to pay.
"Money is tight for a lot of people and they're still willing to open their checkbooks and wallets and they don't even know me. It means a lot that they would do this for me and that they respect my dad enough to do this for him," said Jennifer. A band of brothers that's willing to help any stranger in need.
Jennifer's prognosis is good. If you'd like to donate, contact the Charleston Fire Department.
