Truck drivers may soon by pulling their rigs over for a while.
A possible truckers strike involving independent operators is brewing across the country and the truckers say they want several things
Trucker Chris Walz's rig holds 300 gallons of fuel. And with diesel prices at around 4 bucks a gallon it costs between 600 to a thousand dollars to fill it up. Walz says truckers want better surcharge prices.
“The base the fuel at a certain rate I'll say for example a dollar 25 and then after that when fuel goes up five cents they add one cent to the fuel charge,” Walz explains.
Walz says truckers can rack up between 55 to 90 cents in fuel charges. But some shippers won't pay it.
The truckers also want a break on federal and state fuel taxes.
“They want the government to suspend it, giving them relief basically until the economic times are in better shape,” according to Walz.
And some truckers just want to make more money.
“Believe it or not we've got to put up with a lot of stuff. We've got to put up with other drivers. It can be aggravating,” says Walz.
Walz says the truckers strike will begin on April first, second and third in different locations throughout the country. The truckers say they will strike until shippers agree to pay them four dollars a mile
