If you're a South Carolina Electric and Gas (SCE&G) customer, you could see an increase in your monthly electric bill. Electric rates could climb by about $1 a month under a proposal discussed with state regulators.
Each year the company adjust rates to reflect how much it costs to generate power. This year Scana Corporation says it needs more than $12 million to cover those higher costs. Charles Terreni of the South Carolina Public Service Commission says the utility could have asked for more to cover environmental upgrade costs. But the utility told the commission it would tap excess money in municipal fee accounts to cover those costs. Terreni says the commission will decide later whether to approve the rate increase.
