Music lovers may go from wearing an iPOD to wearing a hearing aid because loud music has damaged their ears.

Anyone with an iPOD should know by now that playing your ipod to loudly can wreak havoc on your ears.  Audiologist Dr. Jennifer Esse usually treats older people suffering from hearing loss. But she says in the near future her patients will be a lot younger.

“Now we're going to see a whole younger set, just strictly iPod ears, and that would be strictly from using an iPOD at too loud of levels,” said audiologist Dr. Jennifer Esse.

iPOD's maker has gotten the message and now you can download maximum output limiting software to reduce the audio levels.

One reason people tend to crank up the volume on their iPODS is because of the way these ear buds fit or don't fit inside the ear.

“People who are active, are finding that they're falling out. What people tell me is that because they're falling out, they're turning up their volume in excess of what we would recommend,” Dr. Esse said.

What Dr. Esse recommends is a custom ear piece that any audiologist can make. It stays put by filling the space in your ear.

“So in theory you should be able to keep your volume down,” she said.

Loud music can cause irreversible damage to your inner ear resulting in permanent hearing loss.
