Sullivan's Island, SC -
An unusually quiet night on Sullivan’s Island, finding an open seat was not a problem even inside restaurants that are typically booming.
”Tonight is not what we needed it to be," said Sean Daniher.”
Daniher is the general manager at Home Team BBQ, he says since the Ben Sawyer Bridge closed for upgrades some customers have been reluctant to pour in. Some businesses used the down time to do their own renovation.
“We've had some people during the rush hour say they gave up," Daniher said.
That reaction is something businesses may have to deal with for days. Monday afternoon crews were able to remove the bridge's old swing span and are working round the clock preparing for the new one. Once completed, the new Ben Sawyer Bridge will offer 14 foot lanes and biking and walking areas.
”When the big bridge to Charleston from Mount Pleasant opened it was a tourist attraction, so I'm hoping that'll happen for us," he said.
Until then some drivers say they're time on Sullivan’s Island will be limited.
”Still trying to make it out here doing what I can but like I said the police and traffic are making things a little more difficult," said Matthew Mason.
