Charleston County - It’s tough to imagine, but for many the place they call home is in jeopardy.
"My home went into foreclosure on Jan. 27th," one Berkeley County resident said. "My husband lost his job and we were not able to make the payment."
She asked not to be identified but did say she's close to being homeless.
"Right now I’m living day to day not knowing whether or not I'm going to have a place to stay in a month," she told ABC News 4.
She is not alone. In South Carolina foreclosure rates have gone up 35 percent from December to January. Locally, Family Services Inc. in North Charleston receives 400 new cases each month.
"A lot of consumers don't want to talk to the lender or are afraid to talk or are intimidated, they don’t know what to say. We take that on,” said Debbie Kidd, Director of the Homeownership Resource Center.
Those facing foreclosure are advised to act quickly, cut back on any unnecessary spending and seek help from a reputable organization for help.
If there is a silver lining to this, it’s that South Carolina is below the national average in terms of foreclosure rates, the worst state is Nevada.
