Charleston, SC - A slice of good news on the job front, the Charleston fire department is ready to add 24 new recruits. The additional firefighters mean trucks will be fully staffed and better prepared to answer the call of duty.
On the scene of every fire, lives and property are at stake. It's a firefighter's job to protect them.
The more hands on deck they say, the safer the city.
"We will be in a much better position to respond to emergencies with this staffing, so it will be a huge deal for us and we are proud that it has come through," said Charleston Fire Chief Thomas Carr.
The cost of 24 new firefighters is covered by a $2.5 million federal grant. The money will be used for 16 weeks of training in different fire fighting certifications and HAZMAT response. The jobs are open to anyone looking for a new career.
"Which is why this is such a good opportunity for people in the community. They dont have to have experience to apply, where in the past we looked for people who are trained," said Carr.
This grant is not easy to get and requires the city to match funds over a five year period.
"The city planned and it's really tremendous because across the country other cities are having to turn the grants back in, because they didnt have the resources to do the match," said Carr.
Once the new recruits are trained and ready, the city will have four people working on every truck called out to an emergency. The city fire panel pointed out staffing as a major issue following the Sofa Super Store tragedy. The new additions move the department another step in the right direction.
The department is expecting an overwhelming response to these jobs because of a tough economy and job loss in the area.
