Sheriff's Deputy Shot In Colleton County
posted 7:57 pm Thu February 21, 2008 - Charleston, SC
Three people including a Colleton County Sheriff's Deputy are recovering after being shot Thursday afternoon. A call that started as a domestic dispute ended with a police chase and a dangerous standoff. Police say the man who started it all is 25-year-old Marvin Lee Williams. He's charged with two counts of assault and battery with intent to kill, grand larceny, multiple firearms charges and traffic violations.
Williams has non-life threatening injuries but his girlfriend, 23-year-old Lavonda Sharpe, was in serious condition when she was careflighted from Walterboro to the Medical University of South Carolina. She suffered gunshot wounds to her face, arm and chest.
Sergeant Jackie Lawson is expected to make a full recovery. Sheriff George Malone of Colleton County said he was talking and resting comfortably late Thursday evening. He was shot at least twice in his shoulder and will undergo more examinations for any internal injuries on Friday.

By 4 o'clock it was all over, Williams had surrendered. Only the chaos he's accused of creating just hours earlier was far from an end.
"Right now, I don't know how I'm feeling, but it really was something to see, really something to see," said Tawana Sharpe, the mother of Lavonda.
She watched her daughter cling to life as she went into surgery, just hours after she says she witnessed Williams shoot both her daughter and the deputy. She says while Williams was in the midst of his standoff he called to apologize.
Sheriff Malone says the chain of events started with Williams shooting his girlfriend, then as he left her residence with his brother, Sgt. Lawson pulled him over. Sheriff Malone says Williams then shot the deputy and took off in his cruiser.
"A chase had ensued behind Lawson's vehicle which is a dodge charger, a very fast vehicle and officers had trouble keeping up with it," said Sheriff Malone.
Williams led officers to his home off Hendersonville Highway and into a three hour standoff.
"He would not let anybody in, in fact he fired on other officers, officers then returned some fire," said Malone.
Neighbor Sheree Avant was trying to get home while her housekeeper watched the whole situation unfold.
"She said all the sudden it sounded like the 4th of July, just gun shots, one right after another," said Avant.
Williams was hit in the lower portions of both his legs by the officers fire. Sheriff Malone said he was losing a lot of blood and getting weak when he finally surrendered. Malone also described the work of Sgt. Lawson. He said he was one of the Department's most experienced officers who always followed protocol. Lawson is also a retired SC State Trooper.
