Beef Recall: Berkeley County Schools Will Not Serve Any Beef

Thursday, the Berkeley County School District issued a statement saying they will not serve any ground beef until the recall is complete.
Thirty-five of South Carolina's 85 school districts placed orders for beef that could have come from a California slaughterhouse at the center of a nationwide meat recall.
The districts ordered meat from the U.S. Agriculture Department, which was delivered from three processors around the country.
Officials say some of the meat could have been provided from the Westland/Hallmark Meat Company, where the meat is subject to recall.
On Monday, Walter G. Campbell, Director of Nutrition and Food Service for Charleston County School District spoke with the state department.

"They have told me that none of the Beef shipped to South Carolina was from the company that is under investigation," he said.
But the Berkeley County School District was worried some of its supply may have come from Westland-Hallmark Meat Company.
"Our food service dept. is in the process of checking lot numbers to determine what, if any, products were purchased and/or used," said Berkeley County Spokesperson, Pam Bailey.
By Wednesday, a statement was issued that all the districts had removed the beef, which was made into frozen taco meat, chili and beef patties.
No illnesses have been reported from the recalled meat, but Berkeley County just wants to be on the safe side.
History of Beef RecallThe largest beef recall in the nation’s history was issued Monday by federal officials, after footage exposed tortured dairy cows in a California slaughterhouse.
Westland-Hallmark Meat Company agreed Sunday to pull 143 million pounds of meat from the market.
The recall dates back two years and the USDA says the majority of the meat has probably already been eaten.
But the agency says it doesn't believe the food presents a significant health risk.
The USDA also wants to reassure everyone that the American food supply is safe.
The recall comes after the Humane Society released undercover video it says shows workers at Westland-Hallmark dragging animals to slaughter that were unable to walk.
That's against federal regulations. The president of Westland/Hallmark says it is cooperating with the USDA's investigation and has implemented measures to ensure all workers follow humane handling policies and procedures.
