Gun Dealer Charged

A Summerville pawn shop owner claims he had nothing to do with an illegal gun sale.
Larry Mickalis was sued by the Mayor of New York City nearly 2 years ago, for an alleged illegal firearm sales. Mickalis then sued the Mayor for slander. Now, Mickalis has been indicted for allegedly selling a gun to a convicted felon, but the timing of the charge is in question.
Mickalis' attorney, Andy Savage, says Mickalis will enter a not guilty plea at the end of the month and one of the first things Savage says he's going to evaluate is why Mickalis, was just charged yesterday when the alleged sale was nearly two years ago.

For 30 years, Larry Mickalis has run his pawn shop on Main Street. Despite his indictment, he refused to keep himself away from his store.
He's letting his attorney do the talking, but off camera he told us he can't find any logic to the case, especially with the charge coming as he was moving forward in his fight against Mayor Bloomberg.
"It seems like in the last 30 days the case against the Mayor of New York has really gone to Larry's favor, so all that's interesting. I don't know what it means, but it's interesting," said Savage.
Savage also questions why a search warrant was exercised the same day Mickalis was indicted and why there's only one charge.
"This is the type of case, the criminal act of selling to a straw purchaser, if you do it once, you've done it many times theoretically, it's like a bad check case, you never see a one count indictment on a bad check case," said Savage.
The Grand Jury charges that Mickalis knowingly sold a .223 rifle and ammunition to 33-year-old Jesse O'Conner, who has a detailed criminal record and could not legally buy a gun.
Andy Savage says O'Conner claims he got another person to buy it for him and Mickalis knew about it. Mickalis will go before a magistrate judge on February 29.
