The fire sprinkler measure passed the house today, but Governor Mark Sanford is threatening to veto it, saying it's too expensive. In the wake of the Sofa Super Store fire, state lawmakers began discussing ways to prevent a tragedy like this from happening again. Providing tax breaks and covering part of the installation costs is the basis for the sprinkler bill.
Senate president Glenn McConnell, one of the main contributors to the bill says he is disappointed in the Governor's statement saying the measure saves money and lives.

"I urge state lawmakers to pass comprehensive legislation so that no community in South Carolina, and no families like those of our fallen nine will ever again lose precious live in preventable fires," Mayor Joe Riley said.
House speaker Bobby Harrell is also reacting to the governor's statement, saying in a published report, the governor missed the point of the bill.
The bill will head to committee before it comes to the full senate floor for a vote.
