Homeless on Folly Beach

The homeless are taking up shelter on Folly Beach and several residents are voicing their concern about it. The issue is not about a huge increase in numbers but it's where some of these people are staying on Folly Beach.
During the off-season, you don't have to go far to find a place to stay on Folly Beach. Many homes open for rent or for sale, but a few residents say it's not buyers checking out the homes, it's the homeless. Tommy Logothetis found one man taking a shower at his mother-in-laws vacant property.
“Open the door please and kind of a disheveled looking person obviously all of his belongings with him,” said Logothetis.

An alarm brought Sandy Townsend to one home recently. She is a real estate agent and had to open the lock box for the fire department.
“You could obviously see where someone had come up from underneath the house and was sleeping at the top of the steps,” said Townsend.
The incidents, though few and far between, could lead to bigger problems. While we were in town, police were called to Center Street to deal with a homeless man, eventually taking him to a nearby shelter. Townsend says officer's time is better spent on other issues.
“If there is one incident, it's a problem our police have other things to do then look for vagrants,” said Townsend.
Eddie Ellis, councilmen with Folly beach, says complaints about homeless are on the rise, and the city needs to solve the problem.
“We have to accept there is a problem, because until we do that we can't work together as a team to help Folly Beach residents,” said Ellis.
Terry Boatwright, the Folly Beach public safety director, says he has no sense this is a major issue based on the numbers. But, he says residents are welcome to call if they notice someone trespassing. Boatwright says aside from a few minor incidents there has been no increase in break-ins.
