That blistering cold tonight is jeopardizing the safety of those without heat. One non-profit organization is going door to door heating up some homes.

ABC News 4 myTAKE - What's Your Opinion? They are shutting out the cold just outside of Awendaw. Non-profit organization, Operation Home’s Elaine Faithful tells the Fordham Family, "This is going to make you real warm."

It’s out with the old and in with the new. Rita Worthy of Berkeley Electric and Elaine Faithful of Operation Home replaced the Fordham family's kerosene heater with two new safer space heaters.

Faithful tells the Fordham’s, "We want you to be warm, but we want you to be safe too."

Safety is the key as families look to keep their homes warm on these bitterly cold nights.

"They were also augmenting the kerosene heater with their stove--they would run their stove up high to add to the additional heat--so both were dangerous situations," said Berkeley Electric’s Rita Worthy, who referred the family to Operation Home.

Operation Home is not only heating their home.

"Tell me how your plumbing's doing," Faithful asked the Fordham’s.

Just a few months ago the Fordham’s didn’t even have running water inside of their home. They would have to go outside, fill buckets up with water and take them inside, and then Operation Home stepped in.

"They did not have plumbing inside. None of their faucets worked and so we replaced those and we put in a water heater," said Faithful.

An act of kindness left Mary Fordham short on words.

"I love them and appreciate them," said Fordham.

This family is only a handful helped by Operation Home.

"As folks are snuggled down in their beds watching your news tonight, I would like for them to think about the people in the community and the Tri-County area that are not sleeping as warm as comfortable as they are."

That includes the Fordham’s, who will be safe and sound, and warm on this possible record setting night.

Operation Home has given out about 40 heaters since December. They also provided 1,000 homes with air conditioning units over the summer. For more information on how to make a donation, visit www.operationhome.org.
