10% Shift

Buying local is more important than ever and even though it may be impossible to buy everything you own from a local retailer, the Lowcountry Local First is just asking you to do the 10% shift...what's that you ask?? It's a grassroots movement of citizens, businesses, government agencies and non-profits working to shift 10% or more of your annual budget from non-local businesses to local ones.  Not only does it help our community, it also helps strengthen those mom & pop shops that are struggling to get by.

There's nothing better than working for a family owned business. While in college, I worked on King Street at The Sportsman's Shop. It's a family owned business run by two brother-in-laws, Tommy & Buddy, (Buddy is married to Tommy's sister) and it was probably the best job I ever had ..excluding this one of course! Many of the people who worked at the Sportsman's Shop are still there today and when I get a chance to stop by, I'm greeted as if I've never left. The money that the shop makes goes right back into our economy and unlike those big box sporting goods store, you really feel like part of the family.

The Buy Local campaign has some reasons why you should buy local:  1. Keeps $ in the Lowcountry    2. Embraces our unique community   3.  Fosters better service & creates more jobs  4. Helps the enviroment and supports community groups...

I'm not being preachy here, it's just an easy way to help your next door neighbor....and when you go shopping for some new running shoes say hello to my old boss for me, Kevin McElwee, at the Summerville Sportsmans shop...it will make his day.
